Federal Member for Groom, Garth Hamilton has slammed People First Bank for its decision to shut multiple branches across the region, reiterating his long-standing opposition to regional bank branch closures.
“For years, I have advocated against the closure of our regional bank branches,” Mr Hamilton said.
“We have seen the real and devastating impact these decisions have on smaller communities in our region.”
“This decision leaves Pittsworth and Oakey with no banking services at all. That is more than just inconvenience – it is a serious failure of basic service provision.”
Mr Hamilton said older residents are being forced to travel to access their own money, while small businesses are losing access to essential services like cash handling and floats.
Mr Hamilton said he strongly supports the comments made by Queensland Treasurer David Janetzki, who has rightly called out People First for misleading regional communities and failing to honour its commitments.
“I strongly support the Treasurer in calling this out,” Mr Hamilton said.
“This is a massive betrayal by People First Bank.”
Mr Hamilton has called on People First to immediately reaffirm their commitment to building their Toowoomba headquarters.
“If People First Bank want to begin rebuilding trust, they can start by recommitting to the establishment of their headquarters in Toowoomba, and prove that its so-called regional focus is more than just branding.”
